WRHL Announces Suspension of Connor Hellebuyck
WINNIPEG, MB — Following today’s announcement by the Winnipeg Jets, the Winnipeg Rec Hockey League has conducted its own review and has elected to impose additional discipline on Connor Hellebuyck.
Effective immediately, Hellebuyck is indefinitely suspended from participating in any WRHL game with a start time of 10:30 p.m. or earlier.
Upon further review, league officials have been advised that the WRHL does not actually schedule games later than 10:30 p.m.
So, unfortunately, this amounts to a complete ban.
The WRHL understands that other recreational leagues in Winnipeg do offer 11:00 p.m. and later start times. We believe those leagues provide an appropriate venue for Connor to serve out his punishment.
Our recommended sanction is simple: 11:00 p.m. games only, indefinitely.
“We take discipline seriously,” the league said. “But we are not monsters. We would never personally schedule an 11:00 p.m. game.”
The WRHL wishes Connor well during this difficult time and hopes several consecutive midnight drives home will give him an opportunity to reflect.
