Division Structure
This summer, we are implementing a new approach to scheduling by starting with larger named divisions that are grouped based on the skill level indicated in the survey.
Please note that these games are NOT pre-season games and will count towards the regular WRHL standings, following the standard rules for winning percentage head-to-head against teams within your division. This approach aims to address the limited amount of time we have to accurately align divisions given the short summer season, while increasing our ability to flexibly pivot and adjust division sizes. Our ultimate goal is to begin with larger divisions to offer more varied opponents based on the feedback we have received. As the season progresses, we plan to narrow down into smaller, tighter division sizes to maximize competitiveness and increase the number of teams that can claim victory.
Because of the customized start dates for different teams, more traditional divisional groupings will be updated towards the end of May and into early June.
Scheduling
The rough "ranges" of scheduling windows will be:
- Scheduling Window 1*: April 24 - May 22
- Scheduling Window 2: May 22 - June 10
- Scheduling Window 3: June 11 - June 30
- Scheduling Window 4: July 1 - End of Regular Season
The league may decide to add a 5th scheduling window in case there is more time needed to determine and be confident in division alignment. In all cases, we aim to have at minimum a 7-day advanced notice for any posted games from the first date listed in each scheduling window.
It is critical to emphasize that once games are posted, it is not possible to reschedule games if you did not include the information to our scheduler prior to the deadlines provided to the league.
Scheduling FAQs
Q: Why does our team play certain teams more than others?
A: Balancing team representatives' preferences, varying opponents, and differing game registrations is challenging. Sometimes, location preferences lead to repeated matchups to accommodate rink preferences. Other factors, like forfeits, postponements, or teams registering for more games, contribute to occasionally having back-to-back games or facing a specific opponent more often.
Q: Why did the survey ask for location ratings but some games aren't in our favorite location?
A: Achieving a balance between parity and location preference is crucial for our league's long-term success. Our sister league in Edmonton shows that broadening the regions teams play in fosters competition and parity. While we consider your team's regional preferences, playing in different city areas occasionally helps us grow as a city-wide league, prioritizing parity and competitiveness.
Q: We can't make a game on a scheduled date. Can we reschedule our game?
A: No, rescheduling games isn't possible due to ice contract commitments and the "knock-on" effect on other teams and schedules. Please always provide scheduling omit dates before deadlines sent by the league to ensure that we can work around your dates.
Gamesheet Requirements
- Players must register separately each season and for each team they play on. Team Managers should review online game sheets after each game and report discrepancies to the League Director within 96 hours via the Stat Request Form.
- Only registered players can participate in games. Unregistered players risk a $50 fine. Team Managers are responsible for ensuring player eligibility, even if not present at a game. Players must sign with their legal names; nicknames, initials, or forged signatures may lead to disciplinary measures. If a player plays on multiple teams, they must register on each team they play for for both insurance but also to ensure they are on your teams roster and can qualify for playoffs, receive statistics, etc.
