PLAYOFFS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

ROSTER EXEMPTION FORM

Playoff scheduling information is emailed to Captain's but not uploaded online until the majority of matchups are confirmed. Please understand that there are thousands of possible what-if scenarios that play out in the days leading up to the end of the regular season, making scheduling very challenging. That is why we cannot guarantee accommodating requests! We hope you can understand.

WRHL Game Feedback Form

League Administration is happy to review any feedback you wish to provide. In an effort to properly document feedback to ensure we can actually track and action it, all feedback must be submitted via our Game Feedback Form.

SCHEDULING INFORMATION

Please send any new omit dates or other important scheduling information that your teams receive to admin@winnipegrechockeyleague.com.

It is critical to emphasize that once games are posted, it is not possible to reschedule games if you did not include the information to our scheduler prior to the deadlines provided to the league.

Scheduling FAQ's

Q: Our team changed division numbers, why?

A: One of the biggest sources of confusion for teams is the fixation they place on the specific division number they are in. Division alignment is completely irrelevant as it relates to a specific number, and should be instead judged on "groupings", which are the teams that you are placed with. For example, a recent decision to make smaller divisions for the next portion of the schedule (see below question for rationale) means that there is a "ripple effect" throughout the WRHL. As another example, assume hypothetically that a Division 4 team registers next year but that zero teams from Division 1-3 register. If the entirety of Division 4 then became "Division 1", people would email in with questions about the number despite (as an example) the makeup the division being the exact same. We strongly encourage Captains to help spread the word to ensure that their co-captains and teammates around the league understand why the fixation on a specific number is not relevant.

Q: Why did many divisions get smaller for the next iteration of the schedule release?

A: The WRHL consulted multiple team representatives in their decision to reduce the size of divisions for the next iteration of the schedule release. As we are still confirming ice for the final regular season games and playoffs, it gave a perfect opportunity to capitalize on a smaller scheduling window (one month of games) to:

  • Test out some new matchups to help the league understand the parity between certain divisions
  • Allow teams to play different opponents
  • Try and ensure that divisions were closer by reducing the number of teams, while still ensuring teams don't get tired of playing the same teams too often (as there is only one month of games being released)
  • Still have time to adjust in the final realignment window if a certain  move was too drastic

As we have done multiple times this year, we encourage team representatives that are interested in shaping the direction of the league to reach out to admin@winnipegrechockeyleague.com and ask to join our Captain's Advisory Committee.

Q: Why does our team play certain teams more than others?

A: There is a very difficult balance to strike between appeasing the wants of different team representatives in terms of location, the importance of varying opponents, and the reality that different teams registered for different numbers of games. In some situations, location preferences are used to repeat matchups to increase the ability to play two teams out of a preferred rink where otherwise that would not be possible. In addition, there are some teams who have registered for more games than others. Other factors, such as credited games from multiple forfeits, postponements due to facility closures, etc., can all play into the difficult decision to balance varying matchups and having the occasional back-to-back games, or higher number of games against a specific opponent.

Q: Why did the survey ask for us to provide location ratings but some of our games aren't in our favourite location?

A: The WRHL strongly believes that an appropriate balance between parity and preference for location is critical for the long term success of our league. Through our sister league in Edmonton, it has become clear that it is possible to become a successful city-wide city with tight competition and fantastic parity by broadening the regions that teams play out of. While we unquestionably take into account your teams preferences region wise, playing in a different area of the city a handful of times per year makes it possible for us to continue our mission of growing into a city-wide league where prioritizing parity over region allows us to be the most competitive league in the city.

Q: We feel as though we have later start times, does the league monitor this?

A: Yes, we track detailed statistics on 10PM & Later starts, which are classified as "late starts". We ensure that teams are always within 10% of the average of their relevant scheduling preference "pool" of teams by the end of the year. For example, teams that are able to play every day of the week would be analyzed against other teams with the same criteria and ensure that averages stay within 10% variance of the average.

Q: When will the WRHL winter season end?

A: We are currently projecting an early March end to the regular season and playoffs finishing in early-mid April. Last year, the winter season was delayed due to the high volume of COVID and weather related postponements and facility closures. Our intention has always been to target an end-of-year around Easter to allow for a spring/summer league.

Q: We now have a date where we cannot make a game, but our schedule is already posted. Can we reschedule our game?

A: No, it is not possible to reschedule games. First, we have ice contract commitments that do not allow us to simply rearrange games. In addition, rescheduling games has a "knock-on" effect to other teams in the league and their schedule, but also your opponents schedule and scheduling information. In most scenarios, it also involves swapping existing teams in their slots as well. A single schedule swap can involve 6+ teams quite quickly and given the relatively limited number of days we have available, it is not possible to reschedule games. Please ensure you are following the procedures to provide omit dates to the League Scheduler.

Game sheets & Rosters

  • All players must register separately each season and submit a new registration each time that they play for a new team. If a player plays for multiple teams, they must register for each team separately.
  • The Team Manager and/or Alternate Team Manager should review each online game sheet the day after their game. If there are any discrepancies regarding attendance or the roster, they must email the League Director within 72 hours of the conclusion of the game. Inquiries that are made after this point will not be actioned. For greater clarity, this means that if for any reason a player is not appearing as a player who played a game, the Team Manager or Alternate Team Manager must alert the league within 72 hours to allow it to be an actioned item.

  • Only Players registered with the League may participate in a game. Having an unregistered player participate in a game is subject, at minimum, to a $50 fine.

  • It is the responsibility of the Team Manager and/or Alternate Team Manager to ensure that any player who plays on their team has registered and is eligible to play in the game that they are playing in. This includes situations in which the Team Manager and/or Alternate Team Manager are not present at a game.

  • All players must print and sign their own legal names. For insurance reasons, do not use nicknames. Initials and forged signatures are not permitted and may result in disciplinary measures.

Playoff & Roster Exemption Procedure

  • Players require 10 games to be eligible for the playoffs regardless of the number of games a team has elected to register for. Goaltenders must be present for one (1) regular season game to qualify for the playoffs as a goaltender. League management must approve situations where someone only qualified as a goaltender wants to play as a skater. In the case that a goaltender has played as both a player and a goaltender at different points during the season, they must have played at minimum four games as a player and reach the overall minimum games threshold outlined to also qualify as a player.
  • We will not accept any requested exemptions until you have finished your regular season and prior to any playoff games.
  • Team Representatives may apply for a roster exemption for a non-eligible playoff player only during the Exemption Window, defined as any time between the conclusion of the teams last regular season game and prior to the first playoff game of the team.
  • Please expect and assume that all exemption requests will be rejected. It is not tied to whether a player has paid, had a legitimate injury, etc., it is to preserve and maintain the integrity of the roster that a team fielded for the bulk of the season. A reminder that injured players can still get credit for the game by appearing at any point during a game on the bench and signing in that way.
